On February 7, 1986, the first child conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) was born in the USSR. At the time, the procedure seemed like science fiction, but 40 years have passed – all fears proved unfounded, and the procedure has evolved from experimental to a real, essential part of our lives.
Today, more than 30,000 children are born every year in Russia thanks to IVF. And it all began with one girl – Elena Dontsova. Her birth, shrouded in complete secrecy, opened a new era, but today Elena lives a perfectly ordinary life. Olga Dontsova, the mother, by her decision led the entire country forward, showing that science can give people the chance to become parents. Today, that chance is available to thousands.
